In the exhibition Building Black, Ekow Nimako investigates the on-going complexities of Black identity with artworks that draw from various cultural, historical, and folkloric elements. He creates masks and freestanding sculptures out of LEGO® that explore the folkloric aspects of his Ghanaian heritage and North American Black History. This unique paring allows him to maintain ties to the history and traditions of his people while transporting western culture into the realm of afrofuturism. These sculptures mean to expose the light and dark side of history through the beautiful aesthetics of LEGO®, making sensitive topics easily accessible.
